How I'm fighting bias in algorithms | Joy Buolamwini
MIT grad student Joy Buolamwini was working with facial analysis software when she noticed a problem: the software didn't detect her face -- because the people who coded the algorithm hadn't taught it to identify a broad range of skin tones and facial structures. Now she's on a mission to fight bias in machine learning, a phenomenon she calls the "coded gaze." It's an eye-opening talk about the need for accountability in coding ... as algorithms take over more and more aspects of our lives. At “Vision & Justice” on Friday, April 26, Joy Buolamwini, Latanya Sweeney, and Darren Walker come together to discuss the limits of technology in the face of algorithmic bias, or the fact that AI systems often either mischaracterize or fail to recognize dark-skinned faces. The two-day creative convening considered the role of the arts in understanding the nexus of art, race, and justice. How to be an Antiracist
“The only way to undo racism is to consistently identify and describe it—and then dismantle it,” writes professor Ibram X. Kendi. This is the essence of antiracism: the action that must follow both emotional and intellectual awareness of racism. Explore what an antiracist society might look like, how we can play an active role in building it, and what being an antiracist in your own context might mean. This conversation was recorded during the 2019 Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado. The week-long event is presented by the Aspen Institute in partnership with The Atlantic. Prominent leaders and thinkers across business, politics, media, culture, science, and more participate in hundreds of panels, interviews, presentations, and screenings. Start with Why - Simon Sinek at USI
Information and subscription on http://www.usievents.com In his talk, Simon Sinek, consultant and author, explain the emergency for companies and organizations to wonder “why”: why, fundamentally, did they build up themselves, why do they exist and which are the values in which they believe? Because those believes are arguments, it can be shared to employees and clients and become lever of membership. Each compnay owns a combination of three strategic compnants: why they exist (“Why”), how they to business (“How”) and what are its products and services (“What”). The specificity of this mix, if the company succeeds in expressing it, become its strength. Companies that understood this approach of leadership are more innovatives and more long-lasting than the others, including in the IT sector. Simon Sinek first started to work in the communication and advertising sector. He published its best-seller Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action in 2009. Its second best-seller “Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t…” was published in 2014.
